Tactical Analysis[]
- Simple and clean: A updated German tank destroyer from the World War, the Wolfhound doesn’t bother with tricks or high-tech weaponry like other tank hunters, it just relies on its massive long range cannon to pick out enemies before they can shoot back.
- Run run run around: The Wolfhound can rabidly reposition itself thanks to its powerful engine and crank up the speed to make quick getaway if in trouble.
- 3: Wolfhound pays for its power and speed with protection and flexibility. Its armour is rather light and its armament is only effective against tanks.
- Knock some sense into ya: Heavy “Shellshock” rounds hit hard enough to stun tank crews even they don’t penetrate the armour. These rounds have only started to reach the front lines so they are only distributed to Wolfhound crews who have had a lot of experience killing tanks.
Operational History[]
Much has been made of the Wolfhound’s legendary prowess. In reality a lot of its combat successes is due to Soviet incompetence. That is not to say it was bad per say, indeed it was quiet effective at turn enemy tanks into scrap, just that the number of kills they made out of proportion to their small numbers was just as much due to the enemy being totally inept. The general in command the front where the majority of Wolfhounds were deployed was a complete failure of an officer who repeatedly sent his tanks unsupported into ambush after ambush, it was only due to the protections of his patrons that saved him from from being stripped of rank and sent to the gulag for life.
As it is the Soviets still had to explain how they lost multiple tank divisions without looking like fools so they concocted stories of a super tank destroying monster as an explanation for their losses.
This ended up backfiring as it caused Soviet tank crews to become utterly terrified facing Wolfhounds while at the same time bolstering the Allies moral. These morale issues will likely only become worse now that the Allies have announced the production of a new line of Wolfhounds for the Reservists.
Concerned with their ability to stand up to super-heavy armoured vehicles, a worry well founded after they struggled to deal with several obsolete Mammoth tanks in Vietnam, the Reservists requested a new heavy anti-armour self propelled platform for their forces. After some debate, an updated version of the Wolfhound was chosen. The tank killer had certainty proved its worth during WWII, and unlike the Mirage Tank it would be cheaper to produce and easier to maintain.
The new Wolfhound features several improvements over its predecessor. The addition of an actual turret for starters has been much appreciated by its crews, giving the Wolfhound much more tactical flexibility than other fixed gun tank destroyers. Other improvements include spectrum range finders, gas turbine engines for additional speed and comfortable faux leather seating. While no Wolfhound has yet had to face Soviet armour, their outstanding combat performance against tanks used by guerrilla forces in both Vietnam and the Middle East are certainly points in its favor.
