From the Outside
Protectorate bases, while sparse, are usually heavily populated with any number and variety of mechanical monstrosities. While the army's composition is always in a state of flux, the composition of the bases always has a constant. Six constants, to be exact.
Inspection of destroyed Protectorate bases has revealed several varieties of mainframe in secure locations across the base. While varying in size, they are usually never bigger than an Apocalypse tank. Most seen so far only reach about Guardian-tank-size. Unfortunately, whatever powers these mainframes is destroyed along with the Singularity Core at the center of the base.
No one has any idea what their function is... for now.
From the Inside
The Core Mind Collective must be very careful when deciding to allow more advanced technology into the battlefield, but no Command Node can delay in responding to a looming threat. The Mainframes were the solution to this quandary.
To erect a mainframe, a Command Node wires a unique encryption code to the nanites responsible for the mainframe's construction. While the data inside is no doubt safe from any human intrusion, the circuitry is not. The encryption ensures that, while outwardly similar, each individual mainframe has wildly different internal structure and data storage media. Some even incorporate tape-based storage alongside solid state drives and molecular data impregnation!
All of this is to ensure that no human can fathom the secrets of the Electrical Protectorate. Some nodes within the Collective have accused those higher up of being unduly paranoid, but none of them argue with the results.
