Known today as aerogel, the substance referred by the Order as liquid smoke, solid smoke or sky jelly had actually been first conceived decades ago, ironically by the Cult.
Seeking a way even the odds Cult alchemists created the substance in hopes that it would protect them from the Order’s weapon of choice:fire. The synthetic substance they created was a porous gel that under tests proved have an extremely low heat conductivity, perfect for protecting against fire.
However soon after the compound where substance was being created came under attack by the Order. In a decision brought on by combination of desperation, confidentiality in his new creation, and some recently inbided drugs the leader of the shrine ordered the sky jelly (no one had decided on a name yet and again he was a little high) to be plastered over the cell’s vehicles before taking on Talon forces.
The plan at first seem to work, as Talon’s flame weaponry was unable to immediate destroy the coated vehicles. However the situation soon turned to the worst as it became apparent that the Cult’s chemicals were not working either. Much to the Cult’s horror the sky jelly was absorbing the debilitating drugs and poisons before the could do any harm. Worse the substance was actually weakening the armour making them vulnerable to more physical means of attack.
With both sides special weapons neutralized the outcome of the battle rested on whoever’s conventional arms were the strongest. Needless to say the Order of the Talon proved victorious and all the cultists were captured or slain. In the aftermath inquisitors were able to acquire the formula for sky jelly before destroying the former hideout.
Sky jelly would be incorporated into the Order’s arsenal, though it would only be deployed on the battlefield at the explicit order of the current commander on the field. While it does negate on of the Order’s favorite tools, the gel is quite useful for cleaning up harmful spills of dangerous chemicals and weakens the armour and is quite difficult to move through.
