Paints targets, kills airborne infantry
"Clearing the skies!"
- - Skysweeper gunner
Tactical Analysis Edit
- Keeping the skies clean: The Skysweeper’s missile turret is no less lethal than other anti air weapons, and the simple chassis it is mounted on helps to keep costs down.
- Radar waves: Additionally, the Skysweeper can occasionally use radar waves that can rapidly kill airborne infantry and light up aircraft on radar, making it easier for other anti-aircraft units to shoot them down.
- That's it?: However, do note that the Skysweeper has no way of affecting ground units thanks to its specialisation.
- Wait a minute!: New Starstroem missiles are available as upgrade, splitting the missile into 4 smaller -but just as deadly- micromissiles that acquire more targets. The cost and rarity of them prevents them being pre-installed to stock models
When International Inc first rolled out its Mk. 41 Skyhunter AA Tank in the late 1950s, it was in response to the increased capability of aircraft, following the development and adoption of jet powered aircraft among the world's militaries. At the time, it was believed that with the increased speeds the new jet aircraft were capable of, anti-air guns would need a high rate of fire to be able to score an effective number of hits on any aircraft.
With this in mind, the Skyhunter was designed with four 20mm revolver cannons, which could maintain a higher rate of fire than traditional autocannons. Coupled with an excellent top speed, rugged all terrain capability, and a relatively low price, the Skyhunter sold extremely well, and even today continues to see use in the militaries of several countries, from Mexico to Saudi Arabia.
However, in 1969, International Inc unveiled its newest anti-air platform; the Mk. 42 Skysweeper Missile System, which was to be superior to the old Skyhunter in every way. Unlike the Skyhunter, the Skysweeper employs heat seeking surface-to-air missiles, in place of a gun-based armament. Many of International Inc's long time customers were quick to place orders for the new vehicles, to replace their Skyhunters.
The Skysweeper boasts several other improvements over its predecessor, most notably the inclusion of an onboard search radar, which allows it to track enemy aircraft. If necessary, a Skysweeper can divert all of its power to its radar to assist other Skysweepers, increasing their effectiveness greatly. Interestingly, there have also been several reported incidents of paratroopers "dying" from Skysweeper radar emissions, though the accuracy of such claims has yet to be verified.
