Tactical AnalysisEdit

  • Protector: Unlike regular base defences, Shield Turrets use their Talon Steel plating to absorb damage from enemies in the vicinity.
  • Most Annoying Sound: Due to the awful sound generated by these turrets, enemies will invariably target them first. Talon personnel have special earpieces to tune out the noise.
  • Legged Guardian: Like other Talon defences, Shield Turrets come with legs that will carry them to where they are needed.
  • Chunk of Steel: However, it is still just a large, tough structure, meaning it has no means to defend itself.

Operational HistoryEdit

The shield is a familiar motif to the Talon. Ever since the crusades, a shield was a knight's best friend. Nowadays, there are so many different weapons that the shield can't keep up. Unless it's made from Talon Steel.

The inspiration for the Talon Shield Turret is none other than the Allied Assault Destroyer, which uses its so-called "Black Hole Armour" to draw enemy fire and protect more vulnerable units. The Shield Turret was simple enough, a large, layered block of Talon Steel, capable of resisting enemy impact. However, as with the Assault Destroyer, it needed something that would force enemies to target it; with the few Black Hole generators the Talon had in their possession were simply far too valuable to waste, a substitute was needed. That replacement was inspired by a very different piece of Allied equipment; the WP100 sonic disruptor used by Attack Dogs. Several examples were stolen by Talon operatives, and Talon Forgemasters were able to modify them to create a pitch that proved so painful and annoying that a person who heard it would do anything to make it stop; indeed, a member of the Inquisition who had been in the vicinity attempted to smash the device when it was turned on, forcing the Forgemasters to hastily switch the device off.

The layers of Talon Steel acted to amplify the noise until it could blanket an entire area of a battlefield in it, as well as shielding the generator from damage; the first test of the device in the field had GLA forces attacking the Shield Turret in a fruitless attempt to destroy it, until Talon forces neutralised them. It was found that the noise could even pass through the crew compartments of armoured vehicles.

Of course, friendly forces would go mad if exposed to the noise for too long; as such, all Talon personnel in the area are fitted with special earpieces identical to those used by the Allies to protect against the amplified barks of their attack dogs, set to tune out the particular frequency that the noise generator is set to.
