Tactical Analysis[]

The Mirage Tank

  • The spectrum cannon: This extremely powerful weapon uses a tightly-focused packet of high-energy photons to cut through any known substance, while a fraction of the energy naturally reflects onto nearby targets, damaging them in turn. The short range of the weapon is its only real limitation, although recent modifications have rectified this problem.
  • Camouflage on the prowl: When not in motion, Mirage Tanks automatically assume the form of mundane objects in the environment, which can lead enemy forces into making dangerous mistakes. While camouflaged, Mirage Tank commanders are under order to remain still unless given specific orders to attack or general clearance to attack enemies on sight.
  • Mind the GAP generator: A single Mirage Tank can conceal a large number of Allied units nearby using the GAP generator, which is extremely useful for transporting high-value forces while keeping the enemy guessing. For example, Athena Cannons and Multigunner IFVs are often known to work in concert with GAP-generating Mirage Tanks.
  • Some restrictions apply: As much as the Mirage Tank can be considered a saving grace of an Allied military faced with the near-impossible task of defending against Soviet heavy armour, it does have a few specific limitations, including a fairly high cost and a vulnerability to enemy aircraft. Fortunately, Mirage Tanks are well-equipped to support other Allied forces that can offset these shortcomings. Mirage Tanks have recently had large parts of their armour removed in order to make space for additional capacitors. This means that the Mirage Tank is less durable than it used to be.

WWIII Operational History[]

Arguably the most powerful weapon in the Allied arsenal, the Mirage Tank combines great firepower with a high-tech camouflaging system--the perfect combination for ambushing Soviet armour divisions attempting to cross international borders without permit. Although this vehicle is based on a French tank chassis and original weapon design, it was military research firm FutureTech Corporation that honed its distinguishing features and managed to mold them together in a successful, cost-effective way. An ongoing partnership with the Allies soon led to the Mirage Tank's mass production, in spite of the Soviet Union's bitter protests and threats of wide-scale retaliation.

A battle between Mirage Tanks and Apocalypse Tanks.

The name of the Mirage Tank is in reference to the effect caused by its on-board reactive camoscanner technology, which envelops the vehicle in a special camouflage field.

To the naked eye, this makes the normally-muscular Mirage Tank resemble something common and mundane to its surroundings, be it a tree or a milk truck, or even a smaller object such as a lamp post. Even when under the scrutiny of a sophisticated scanning array, this makes the Mirage Tank altogether invisible. Consequently, the camoscanners enable Mirage Tank operators to blend into their environment, to elude enemy forces or stage an ambush... provided that they remain motionless and do not fire the main gun.

These limitations are necessary to reduce heat signatures and conserve energy, as otherwise, enemy forces would be able to pick up the disguised Mirage Tank on short-range scan. The number of times camouflaged Mirage Tanks have successfully routed Soviet armour divisions continues to climb, to that point at which it no longer seems possible to keep accurate count of their successes (in part because Soviet ministers have now taken to blaming any accidents resulting in the destruction of their forces on Mirage Tank ambushes).

The camoscanners would be of limited value if not for the Mirage Tank's main weapon, the spectrum-dispersion cannon. Essentially light itself weaponised, the spectrum cannon focuses and amplifies light waves to form an extremely destructive (though short-ranged) burst of high-energy photons, which can cut through any known substance easily.

What's more, the spectrum cannon's energy disperses from its targets, refracting onto nearby forces, and making it still easier for just a small group of Mirage Tanks to counter armoured divisions many times their number. Apart from its limited range, the spectrum cannon's only other limitation is that it must be firmly mounted into the chassis of the Mirage Tank. Fortunately, Mirage Tanks are maneuverable enough to be able to quickly turn to face most armoured forces.

As if all this weren't sufficient, Mirage Tanks possess one other remarkable trick in the GAP generator device, which creates a field that is impervious to light, sound and rest of the electromagnetic spectrum. While Mirage Tanks cannot disguise themselves or use their weapon while the GAP generator is active, they are able to conceal small armies in this fashion, causing enemy forces to grossly underestimate their numbers.

The sophisticated systems on the Mirage Tank demand years of training to master, and only the most experienced tank commanders are allowed to man these unique tanks. As one Mirage gunner put it after the Battle of Flanders: You cannot kill what you cannot see[...]

Post-War Operational History[]

Entire plates of Chobham armour have been removed to make room for capacitors for the spectrum-dispersion cannon. Though this dramatically increased damage and range, Mirage commanders have made several official complaints about their now vulnerable tanks. Allied High Command has responded that the Mirage was never designed nor intended to be shot at.

Following the trials of the new Barkhausen Projector, several experiments were made into high-intensity microwave weapons for ground use. This has resulted in the development of a microwave gun that can destroy enemy vehicles with a continuous stream of energy, cooking electronics inside the target and flash boiling the bodily fluids of exposed infantry. Though it does not refract like the spectrum dispersion cannon, the microwave gun has a massive area of effect and can be fired more quickly. In addition, the microwave gun will disable vehicles that are not destroyed outright, and is lethal to infantry.

Unfortunately, many Mirage commanders had problems adapting to the new microwave weapons as they had a very different operating procedure from what they were trained in. As such, only the most experienced and most daring Mirage commanders went in for the upgrade. They say they are quite satisfied with the upgrade, but even that doesn't seem to change the minds of rookies.
