"Some folks are born made to wave the flag,
ooh, that white eagle on blue,
And when the band plays "Hail to the Chief",
Ooh, they point the cannon at you, Lord."
- - "Fortunate Son" by Creedence Clearwater Revival, about American draftees into the Allied Reservists
The Allied Reservists represent the coalition of national armies that fight in support of the Allied Peacekeeping Divisions. Where the Peacekeepers are expected to be fast, air mobile and rather small in number, the Reservists represent the actual bulk of the Allies' defensive potential. They will be playable in several Allied missions, your enemy in other campaigns, and will be represented in skirmish maps as neutral structures.
Background[]
The Reservists
While the Peacekeepers are an all-volunteer, highly specialised international force, the various member states of the Allied Nations do of course maintain their own national militaries, armed and equipped to defend Allied territory. While these units are technically not supposed to be used outside of Allied lands, they are by no means unprofessional or part-time; they are often men and women who are training to meet the stringent demands of the Peacekeeper forces, though drafted citizens in wartime are not unknown. Recently, many men and women are joining to gain qualifications in a new Allied venture; and it's working. Field Medics can become doctors without having to pay university fees, Combat Pilots can become commercial pilots without needing to go through civilian training schools and Engineers can transfer directly into their mechnical area of expertise in the private sector with no additional training needed. Anyone with a Reservist background on their CV is almost instantly accepted into any high-profile job of their chosen specialty.
Unified Front
When the Allied Nations was first created, the need for an organized front was a necessity to face the Soviet armies forcing their way through Germany. This was difficult at first, as each nation to that point had their own standards on military training, equipment, and even rank structure. After the war, this was streamlined to become a new force. Unlike the Peacekeepers, who are not beholden to any single national military hierarchy, the Reservists are both soldiers in their home nation, and when the need arises are called into duty on behalf of the Allied Nations. While still armed and supplied by their home nations, the additional funding given by the Allies for these programs often means some level of standardization for these soldiers, though nowhere near what would be expected by a major military force.
Big Bird and Little Bird
Relations between the Reservists and the Peacekeepers are not uniform as is to be expected with any large organisation. While there are of course, all manner of derisive nicknames for each other this is universal to every multi-branch armed force throughout human history and largely an inevitable consequence of having multiple services. Even within the Peacekeepers or the Reservists there are some generally not overly serious and usually rather jocular rivalries between different branches of service; with the noted but still not serious enough to cause issues outside of the political arena air force and navy rivalry where there are more serious things at stake regarding funding allocation between the Air Force's long range patrol wings and Naval Aviation; and will usually be put aside when the shooting starts.
However, to be familiar with the dynamics of the Reservist and Peacekeeper relationship one should be aware of the often colourful nicknames given to each other often shouted at one another during intra-branch sports events or at mess halls. Common taunts include
- Glory Boys: Noun; Reservist term for Peacekeepers referring to a perception that the Peacekeepers tend to get the more glorious battles while they're more often busy with duties such as trench digging.
- Speedbump: Noun; Peacekeeper term for Reservists, a generally lightly joking means to express doubt that the Reservists will still be alive by the time the Peacekeepers arrive.
- Spotlight Squad: Noun; Reservist term to jokingly accuse the Peacekeepers of absorbing more attention from the media due to being more glamorous.
- Mudskippers: Noun; Peacekeeper term referring to tendency of Reservists to be less clean than their standards due to having lower priority access to MCV equipment such as SPAM built showers.
- No-Regs: Noun; Reservist term of snark out of a belief that the Peacekeepers have "no uniform regulations" as a means to poke fun at sometimes scantily clad units like the Javelin Soldier or Agent Tanya or the Kilt of the Rifleman.
- Baby Face: Noun; Peacekeeper term regarding the reservist mandate of clean-shaven faces without exception (due to need to ensure seals on a gas mask in case of hazardous atmosphere) as well as stereotype of reservists being younger on average.
- Cop-Actors: Noun; Reservist term lightly poking fun at the police inspired aesthetic of the peacekeepers, in contrast to the more overtly soldier like garb of the Reservists.
- Blueberries: Noun; Peacekeeper term regarding the much heavier usage of the colour blue in Reservist uniforms without the gunmetal and black that balances out the peacekeepers' uniform palette.
- Captain Casanovas: Noun; Reservist term regarding stereotype of Peacekeepers as being fond of seducing local women (or men) with their "animal magnetism".
- Wife Stealers: Noun; Derived from a common Peacekeeper joke about Reservists deployed in an overseas Peacekeeper's home country cuckolding the victim of teasing (usually the youngest in a squad) by sleeping with their spouse. Rarely said directly to Reservists.
Back to Front
Where the Peacekeepers have the greatest share of the limelight thanks to their status as elite soldiers, the Reservists under A.N. command are tasked with the greatest brunt of work in the Allies spheres of influence. Their presence in Europe often serves as a reminder that the Allies are nearby to the common civilians, and a warning to possible insurrectionists that their actions will receive a response. Reservists will also often serve in their own countries, but this policy has changed. Thanks to actions in Vietnam and the Middle East, increasing numbers of reservist forces are being ordered into other parts of the world, much to the chagrin of their home nations.
Standards
One of the biggest issues facing the Reservists are that of standardized training and competency. Often, reservists trained in nations like the US or Canada will be vastly better trained and equipped than a Reservist from Chile or Cambodia. These differing standards can often be ignored, until the reality strikes in actual combat. While AN regulations do make some conditions on what can qualify a national army for volunteering forces to the Reservists, the reality of the current world is that many Reservists can only be drawn from Allied member states that have been a part of the alliance since the very beginning. This also extends to the vehicles utilized by the Reservists. Many nations must provide their own equipment and vehicles, which means that along with surplus Allied designs, International Inc. and homegrown designs will often see increased use in Reservist service.

Army[]
"I am an Allied reservist. I am the first line of defense of my nation. I will defend my nation with my life. I am part of a strong force, and I am only a small part of that force. I must serve this force to the best of my ability, for I am the part that keeps this force strong. I will keep myself strong to keep the Reservists strong. I will never abandon a fellow reservist. I will serve under the dictates of my lawfully appointed officers, both of my nation, and of the Allied Nations. All this I swear, until I die."
- - "The Reservist's Creed", repeated when a new Reservist is inducted.
Units[]
Defender | The basic soldier of the Reservist forces, Defenders use MX-15 Assault Rifles and Flash-Bang grenades to defend Allied territory. They are well equipped, though not nearly as well protected as Peacekeepers.
Rocket Defender | Armed with light machine guns suitable for suppressing enemy infantry, they can also deploy into sandbag emplacements from which they can use their anti-tank missile launchers.
Ranger Battle Car | This updated version of the Combat Ranger is armed with a grenade launcher suitable for use against light vehicles and battlesuits. It can also be used to tow Howitzers quickly around the battlefield.
Retriever APC | The brother to the Jackson APC, this heavy combat transport is equipped with a top mounted .50 cal heavy machine gun, while also transporting six infantry within its armoured hull.
Crusader Medium Tank | The result of a collaboration between General Motors and Renault, this updated version of the Mastiff surpasses the old Mastiff in nearly every way with a punchy 120mm L30 rifled gun, superior armour while being equipped with a spectrum targeter to assist friendly forces.
Pershing Howitzer | Foot-mobile strategic artillery, the Pershing Howitzer can provide cheap fire support, but is extremely vulnerable to damage. It must be deployed before it can fire, and can be connected to a Ranger Battle Car for increased mobility.
Steelrain Artillery | The Steelrain Artillery is a mobile World War II armoured half-track which fires four missiles at a steady speed at enemy targets. In urgent fire missions, it can launch all four missiles at once, but must stop to reload.
Wolfhound Tank Destroyer | A German Tank Destroyer design fitted with a long 150mm gun that the entire vehicle is built around as well as decent armour and good mobility especially when it uses its turbocharger, the Wolfhound eschews the Bulldog's subtlety in favour of just hitting the enemy really hard.
Cardinal Slick | This version of the Cardinal is more combat oriented, with MG-60 machine guns instead of a spectrum designator.
Chrono Miner | The Allies' last generation ore collector, the Chrono Miner can be ordered to chronoshift itself along with ore to a location near a Reservist Ore Refinery or Command Centre, leaving hitchhikers like Terror Drones behind. |
Watercraft[]
Horizon Frigate | An Allied Frigate designed for the more numerous Reservist, basing off an old design. The Horizon patrols the oceans of Allied territory, blasting apart enemy ships and aircraft with its 75mm cannon. But its main feature is the UAV sitting upon its helipad, which the captain can order to take flight and carpet bomb the targets. |
Structures[]
Command Centre | The Allied Reservists plan and coordinate strategies and manoeuvres in these well-armoured buildings. Capturing them will provide one with assistance from the Reservists' arsenal.
GPS Uplink | Using the latest developments in Allied navigation technology, the GPS Uplink is able to give the Reservists their radar and powerful support abilities.
MK2 SPAM Refinery | The Allied Reservists still make use of the same SPAM modules as those used in the Cold War to set up Ore Refineries in the field.
Reservist Supply Pad | Made to support the Reservist on the frontlines. The Supply Pad allows the Reservist to get a steady supply of income through Allied Condor dropping supplies along with the ability to call in reinforcements.
Patriot Missile System | The predecessors to the Multigunner Turret updated to serve the Reservist. the Patriot fires a salvo of missiles effective against vehicles and aircraft. Alternatively, the Patriot can activate its communications relay, lowering its rate of fire but letting it coordinate with another nearby Patriot, letting it fire outside of its range to aid the main one. |
Reinforcements[]
These forces can be called upon during Minor Faction Deathmatch. The hard-charging forces that form the vanguard of Allied actions, the Peacekeeper Recon is often the first support for Reservist forces on the field. Reservist Air Force may come to provide close air support, too. They're capable of hitting the enemy while the Reservists hold the line.
Observer Peacekeeper | Euphemistically named snipers, Observer Peacekeeeper unlike their defender counterparts do in fact, bother with stealth, especially as often they are expected to bring out their observation equipment and silently monitor the enemy for movement.
Recon Peacekeeper | Hotshot infantry who form the vanguard of Allied forces, Recon Peacekeepers can switch between light machine guns and grenade launchers.
Recon Leopard | A supercharged and heavily modified Leopard LAV, outfitted with a gatling gun and TOW missile launcher. It is crewed by Recon Peacekeepers, who can dismount, leaving the vehicle standing by for them to reclaim. Watch out! The vehicle is extremely vulnerable when empty.
Condor Heavy Lift Transport | A large, heavy tiltrotor helicopter, the Condor can carry an impressive number of soldiers, as well as a swivel-mounted spectrum designator to mark targets for destruction by supporting friendly forces.
Hawker Spectre | A variant of the Hawker, the Spectre carries two large napalm bombs that engulf enemy targets within a firestorm, and can also strafe an area with its autocannons. Constructed by the Support Airfield.
Revenant Gunship | Heavy gunship, descendant of the Harbinger Gunship and variant of the Galaxy cargo plane, a typical Revenant is armed with three miniguns and a howitzer. The howitzer can only be used when the crew receives special clearance to fire it; usually, this bombardment is powerful enough to obliterate anything within a large radius. |
Reinforcement Packages[]
Support Airfield | A small airpad is quickly constructed to support Hawker Spectre operations in the area. One airpad could build and support one Hawker Spectre.
Recon Team | A Condor carrying a fully loaded Recon Leopard is deployed to the battlefield.
Gunship Rescue | A Revenant Gunship flies in to provide overwatch for the reservists. |
Deathmatch Protocols[]
Once the reservists secure enough ground, they can begin calling in support assets to secure their positions.
Parachute Drop | X Defenders and X Rocket Defenders are airdrops to provide reinforcements.
Cryo-Bomb | A reservist Hawker armed with a single liquid helium bomb targets the specified area and freezes any infantry, denying the area to vehicles.
Cutlass Strike | A reservist Cutlass Ramjet drops a spectrum-guided bomb onto a single unit or structure you designated. While having little to no AOE damage, the bomb is able to blast through most vehicles in one strike. The Cutlass will track down the target and engage enemy aircrafts along the way. |
Behind the Scenes[]
- The Reservists are based on the USA faction in Generals, similar to how the GLA and Red China are based on their respective factions in Generals. Also, all the USA generals are mentioned as officers in Reserve Forces. (Granger, Townes, Alexander, Ironside, etc.)
